What is a session with a Homeopath like?

Our first meeting

Homeopathic consultation

Homeopathic consultation

In a homeopathic consultation, I would like to know the exact symptoms you are experiencing. Your symptoms are a very personal and unique expression of how your Life Force is coping with the burden of stress, infection, etc. Another way of explaining this is by saying that we get sick in individual ways, showing distinctive patterns of symptoms.

Together, we shall find a remedy that matches both, you and your symptoms, as closely as possible. This close and confidential session is called “case-taking”, and I will want to know not only precise details of your current illness, but will also consider other aspects of your health including your past medical history, diet, lifestyle and personality.

A Holistic Approach

The case-taking session is directed at discovering the person-in-disease. It is a highly individualized and holistic approach. Homeopathy perceives our individual symptoms are an outward reflection of our inner disturbance. You may be asked many questions, and some of them will seem strange if you are not used to homeopathy. That is so because I would like you to participate in building up a picture of your unique make-up – a bit like putting a jigsaw puzzle together.

Typically the first consultation may take 45-75 minutes. Homeopathy asserts that the Mind and Body operate as one entity called mindbody, and you cannot treat one part of the mindbody without affecting the whole. Remedies are chosen to fit all your characteristics. Please tell me what makes you feel better or worse (e.g., a particular posture, time of the day, season, moon phase, motion, rest etc., shifting pains and their direction, to name a few). What are the sensations you feel, and, is there something else going on in the mindbody when the symptoms appear or disappear?

Remember, I am your guide, and together we shall find the remedy that matches the present state of your mindbody.

Follow-ups

The first follow-up consultation will usually be around four weeks after the first prescription, although in some cases it may be sooner. The session may be shorter, and I would like to know about changes that have occurred, using the previous detailed notes as a reference point. This will help to decide our the next step in your healing journey.

The number of consultations you may need is difficult to predict – it depends on a number of factors such as your age, how long the symptoms have been going on and their individual response to the prescription.

What about my doctor?

It is recommended that you maintain your relationship with your physician or doctor. Homeopathy works well with conventional approaches and can be used alongside any other form of medical care. Some people choose homeopathy because they are unhappy with side effects from their current conventional medication. Hence you should continue with any conventional medical treatment that you may have already been prescribed as it can be dangerous to stop this suddenly. Any change in use of conventional medication should be discussed with your primary heath-care provider, physician or doctor.

If at any stage you are concerned about changes in your symptoms, you should inform me and contact your physician or doctor immediately.
